Festival outfit for men: the short answer

A good festival outfit combines appearance, comfort and practicality. Choose clothing that lets you move for a long time, adapt the material to the weather and check in advance whether the festival has a dress code.

For a queer festival or Pride, you can combine shorts with a tank top, mesh top, jockstrap or harness, for example. If you want to go further, a singlet, thong, fetishwear or other clubwear are possible options. At a fetish festival, a much bolder outfit may be common or even part of the dress code.

There is therefore no single perfect festival outfit. The type of festival largely determines how much you can or want to experiment with your clothing.

Start with the type of festival

Before deciding which colour or garment you want to wear, it makes sense to look at the event itself. An outfit that works perfectly at Milkshake may look completely out of place at another event or may not even meet the dress code.

Regular music festival

At a general music festival, comfort and the weather are usually the main considerations. Shorts, a T-shirt, tank top or lightweight top are easy choices. Bold underwear, a mesh shirt or accessories can make the outfit more personal without making you appear fully dressed in clubwear straight away.

Pride

At Pride, clothing is often also about visibility and self-expression. Rainbow colours are an option, but certainly not a requirement. A colourful brief, thong or jockstrap, a harness, mesh top or bold tank top can just as easily be part of a Pride outfit.

Queer festival

Festivals such as Milkshake and Superflirt offer plenty of room for individual style. You generally see much more clubwear, mesh, harnesses, jockstraps and bold looks there than at the average music festival.

That does not mean you have to arrive dressed up. With a come as you are approach, jeans with a tank top can fit just as well as a carefully put-together club look.

Fetish and club festival

At events that are more strongly rooted in the fetish or club scene, clothing can be part of the event's identity. Think leather-look materials, harnesses, singlets, jockstraps, mesh and other clothing where the body is deliberately part of the outfit.

Here it is especially important to check the official dress code in advance. Open-minded does not automatically mean that everything is allowed, and some events have specific clothing rules.

Jockstrap as part of your festival outfit

A jockstrap is interesting for festivals because it uses little fabric while still providing support at the front. The style has a pouch, waistband and two elastic straps around the buttocks. This leaves the rear almost completely open.

You can simply wear a jockstrap under shorts, but you can also deliberately make it part of your outfit. For example, let the waistband show above low-rise shorts or remove a layer of clothing during the festival.

A harness: a lot of impact with little clothing

A harness can immediately transform a simple festival outfit. You can wear it directly on a bare upper body, but also over a tank top, mesh shirt or T-shirt.

That makes a harness interesting if you want a distinctive queer or club look without appearing from head to toe in fetishwear.

There are major differences here too. An elastic fashion harness feels different from a firmer faux-leather style. Keep in mind that a material that feels comfortable while trying it on can feel different after hours of dancing, heat and perspiration.

Mesh: airy and visible

Mesh is common in festival and clubwear. The fabric can range from relatively closed sports mesh to a highly transparent material.

In warm weather, a thin mesh top can feel comfortable because there is little material around your body. At the same time, mesh lets you play with what is visible underneath. A bold jockstrap, brief or harness can therefore become part of the complete outfit.

Pay attention to the fabric, however. Not every mesh material is equally soft or elastic. With a garment worn directly against the skin, that can make a difference after several hours.

Singlet: one garment, complete look

A singlet covers more of the body than a harness or jockstrap, but its close shape can make it quite bold.

The advantage at a festival is that one garment immediately gives you a complete look. Depending on the style, you can combine a singlet with trainers or boots and optionally a harness or other accessories.

In warm weather, pay particular attention to the material. A thin, elastic fabric can feel very different from a thicker faux-leather or wet-look version.

Thong, brief or bikini brief

You do not automatically have to choose a jockstrap if you want your underwear to be a visible part of your outfit.

A thong has little fabric at the back and can work for a very revealing look. A brief provides more coverage, while a bikini brief or tanga creates a distinctive middle ground with its very narrow sides: from the front it can almost resemble a jockstrap, while the rear covers the buttocks.

Which shape feels comfortable during a long festival day ultimately depends mainly on what you are used to wearing.

Which materials are suitable for a festival?

Cotton

Cotton feels soft and familiar, but absorbs moisture relatively easily. A cotton shirt that becomes soaked with sweat or rain can therefore remain wet for a long time.

Polyamide and polyester

Synthetic fabrics are widely used for sportswear, clubwear and festivalwear. They can be thin, lightweight and quick-drying. Their exact properties do, however, depend strongly on the fabric construction and combination with other fibres.

Elastane

Elastane is usually combined with other materials and provides stretch. In close-fitting clothing such as singlets, briefs and jockstraps, this can have a major effect on freedom of movement.

Mesh

Mesh mainly describes the open structure of a fabric and does not necessarily refer to the material itself. Mesh can, for example, be made from polyamide or polyester. The more open the structure, the more air and skin can generally pass through or remain visible.

Faux leather and wet look

These materials can fit a fetish or club look perfectly, but they are not automatically the most breathable choice for a warm outdoor festival. Take the temperature and how long you want to wear the outfit into account.

Layers are your best friend

A festival may start in the middle of a warm afternoon and not finish until late in the evening. You may also want to wear more clothing on the way to the festival than once you are on the site.

Work with layers. For example, jockstrap + shorts + mesh top + light shirt, or brief + singlet + overshirt.

You can then add or remove pieces during the day. A locker is useful for this, so check in advance whether the festival provides them.

What should you wear when it is hot?

In high temperatures, preferably choose less and lighter fabric, enough freedom of movement and materials that do not become heavy when you perspire.

A jockstrap, short shorts, tank top or thin mesh top can then feel more comfortable than several thick layers.

A sexy outfit is ultimately worth little if you are already tired of wearing it after an hour.

And what if it rains?

A summer festival in the Netherlands unfortunately does not automatically mean sunshine.

Check the weather forecast in advance and consider what happens to your outfit if it gets wet. Some light fabrics become much more transparent when wet, cotton can remain damp for a long time and some shoes will never be quite the same after a muddy festival site.

A light rain jacket or poncho may add little to your carefully planned outfit, but it can add a lot to your mood.

Do not forget your shoes

You can wear the perfect harness for ten hours, but that is of little use if your shoes start hurting after two.

Choose shoes in which you can stand, walk and dance for a long time. Wearing new shoes for the first time at a festival is usually not a good experiment.

Boots can work perfectly with some club and fetish looks, but at an outdoor festival you should also consider heat and weight.

Can you attend a festival wearing only a jockstrap or thong?
