What is a jockstrap? Everything about fit, use and differences

A jockstrap is men's underwear with a supportive pouch at the front, a waistband and two elastic straps that run alongside and beneath the buttocks. The buttocks themselves remain largely uncovered. This makes a jockstrap feel very different from a brief, boxer trunk or thong: you get support at the front, but almost no fabric at the back.

How is a jockstrap constructed?

Although jockstraps can differ considerably from one another, the basic design almost always consists of three parts: the waistband, the pouch and two elastic rear straps.

The waistband

The waistband keeps the jockstrap in place. Some styles have a relatively narrow and flexible band, while classic athletic versions are known for a wide waistband. The pouch

The pouch is the front section that holds the genitals. That sounds simple, but this is precisely where there are major differences between brands. The straps

Two elastic straps run down from the waistband at the sides and then beneath the buttocks. They keep the pouch and waistband in place without requiring fabric over the buttocks. The width, tension and position of these straps have a major influence on how a jockstrap feels.

How should a jockstrap fit?

A well-fitting jockstrap should provide support without pinching. The waistband stays in place, the pouch provides enough room and the straps lie flat beneath the buttocks without cutting uncomfortably into the skin.

Pay particular attention to these three points:

• The waistband stays in place: it should not constantly slide down or roll over.
• The pouch suits your body: too little room can become uncomfortable, while an overly roomy pouch provides less support.
• The straps sit neatly beneath the buttocks: they can provide support, but do not need to be so taut that they pull into the skin.

Fit also depends on the brand. A size M from one brand does not necessarily fit the same as a size M from another. It is therefore better to use your actual waist measurement and the size chart of the relevant brand rather than relying only on your usual trouser or underwear size.

Why do men wear a jockstrap?

There is no single reason to wear a jockstrap. For some men it is mainly a comfortable form of underwear, while for others it is a style choice.

Support without much fabric

Because the front consists of a pouch and the rear is open, there are no legs and almost no fabric around the buttocks. This can feel comfortable when you want plenty of freedom of movement or simply do not like extra fabric around your legs.

A different fit from a brief

A brief covers the buttocks and wraps around the body. A jockstrap does not. This makes it feel more open and airy, while the pouch at the front can still provide support.

Underwear designed to be seen

The open rear is of course also an important part of the look. Brands deliberately play with this through wide or narrow straps, bold colours, mesh, prints and distinctive waistbands. The range therefore varies from an understated cotton basic to bold clubwear.

Not every jockstrap is protective sports underwear

This distinction is important. The jockstrap comes from the world of sport, and there are styles specifically used as athletic supporters or together with a protective cup. But many modern jockstraps are designed as fashion underwear or clubwear.

A jockstrap with a sporty appearance is therefore not automatically suitable as protection during contact sports. If a style has a protective cup or is intended for a specific sport, this should be explicitly stated in the product information. What types of jockstraps are there?

If you are looking at jockstraps for the first time, you may mainly notice the open design. In practice, however, two styles can feel completely different to wear. The main differences are in the pouch, straps and fabric.

Cotton jockstraps for everyday use

The basic construction remains the same, but the appearance can be far removed from classic athletic underwear.

Which pouch suits you?

When choosing a jockstrap, the pouch is at least as important as the colour. There is no universally best pouch: it depends on how much room and support you prefer.

Broadly speaking, you can look at three characteristics:

• More support: a pouch that fits closer keeps everything more compactly in place.
• More room: a roomier or anatomically shaped pouch reduces the feeling of compression.
• More shape: some pouches use additional seams, a double layer or shaping that makes the front stand out more clearly.

Jockstrap, brief, thong or suspender: what is the difference?

Jockstrap versus brief

A brief covers the buttocks and has fabric running around the body. A jockstrap replaces the rear with two straps. Both can have a supportive pouch, but the wearing experience at the back is completely different.

Jockstrap versus thong or string

With a thong or string, a narrow section runs between the buttocks. A jockstrap does the opposite: the centre of the rear remains open and two straps run underneath the buttocks.

Jockstrap versus suspender

A suspender leaves the rear even more open. The style consists of a waistband and pouch, with the pouch not connected to the back of the waistband by straps or fabric. A jockstrap, by contrast, has two elastic straps running from the pouch around the buttocks to the waistband. Jockstrap versus boxer trunk

A boxer trunk provides considerably more coverage. It has short legs and completely covers the buttocks. If you want as little fabric as possible and maximum freedom at the back, these two styles are almost at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Can you wear a jockstrap every day?

Yes. There is nothing about the design that means a jockstrap is only intended for sport, a party or a special occasion. If the size is right, the pouch feels comfortable and the material suits what you are doing that day, you can simply wear a jockstrap as everyday underwear.

For everyday use, many men choose a softer cotton style. For a warm day, festival or club night, a lightweight microfiber or mesh version may feel more comfortable. Ultimately, that is mainly a matter of personal preference.

What size jockstrap do you need?

Do not automatically assume you need the letter size you always buy. Brands use different size charts and the elasticity of waistbands also varies.

My advice is to measure your waist in centimetres and compare it with the brand's official size chart. If you are between two sizes, also look at the material and construction. A highly elastic waistband can feel different from a wide classic athletic band.
