What does gay underwear mean? Styles, brands and differences

Gay underwear is not an official category with one fixed fit or one specific type of design. The term is usually used for men's underwear that is popular within the gay community, but also for underwear featuring Pride colours, rainbows or other LGBTQIA+ symbols.

That does not, of course, mean that certain underwear is only intended for gay men. A jockstrap, brief, thong or boxer trunk does not have a sexual orientation. Some styles and brands have, however, become strongly associated with queer fashion, club culture and self-expression.

What do people mean by gay underwear?

When someone searches for gay underwear, the term can broadly mean two things:

• Underwear that is popular within the gay community: for example jockstraps, briefs, thongs and bold underwear with distinctive pouches, colours or waistbands.

Why are jockstraps so popular?

The jockstrap has a distinctive combination of support and an open rear. The pouch covers and supports the front, while two elastic straps run beneath the buttocks. This gives the style a sporting origin, but also a bold look that suits clubwear well.

Briefs: from basic to bold

That variety makes briefs interesting when you want full rear coverage but more shape and character than a standard men's brief.

Thongs and strings for men

With a thong or string, much less fabric remains at the back. A narrow section runs between the buttocks, making the style feel very different from a brief or jockstrap.

• Pouch: do you want everything held closer to the body or more room at the front?

• Waistband: a wide sporty waistband creates a different wearing experience from a narrow elastic band.
